Evergreen Empire Open

June 14-15, 2003

Tournament Report

The 52nd Evergreen Empire Open was held at The Tacoma Chess Club on June 14-15. Neil Salmon, Michael S. MacGregor, and Geoffrey Gale tied for first place. Because Geoffrey Gale paid the economy fee of $10, he was ineligible for prize money; therefore, Mike and Neil won $115.00 each. Dereque Kelley won Class A, $70.00. There was no 2nd place prize as the only other Class A player paid an economy entry. Darby Monahan took the Class B, $70.00 1st place prize. Eric Holcomb took home the $35.00 2nd place prize. In Class C Eric Woodlief pocketed the 1st place prize & Sterling Dietz took 2nd. Darren Wu & Alan Hsieh tied for 1st & 2nd. Each took home $52.50. TD Gary Dorfner

Mike MacGregor is the 2003 Tacoma Chess Club Champion. Larry Anderson is 1st Class A Champion. Steve Buck is 1st Class B Champion. Frank Marion is 1st Class C Champion. Roel Garcia is 1st Class D Champion. Thomas O'Hearne II is Junior Champion.

Tournament Report

After losing to Steve Buck, Michael MacGregor won four consecutive games to tie with the undefeated Steve Buck for first place overall with 4.0 points. Kirk Steinocher took 1st place of Rating Group #1 with 3.5 points. Steve Buck took 1st place of Rating Group #2 with 4.0 points. And there was a three-way tie for Rating Group #3, with 2.5 points, shared by Eric Holcomb, Michael Moore, and Darren Wu. Thanks to all those who participated and congratulations to the undefeated Steve Buck.

Mike MacGregor took first place overall and won $73; Vernon Van Poucke placed first in Rating Group #1, $44; Eric Woodlief earned first in Rating Group #2, $41; and Alan Hsieh and Roel Gracia tied for first in Rating Group #3 for $19 each. A donated and free set was awarded to those who placed second in each rating group: Dereque Kelley, Steve Buck, and Andy Carpenter, respectively. For upsets, Steve Buck began the tournament by drawing top-rated Viktors Pupols, Eric Woodlief won third-seed Paul Bartron, and Alan Hsieh drew fourth-seeded Dereque Kelley. Tournament Director was Gary Dorfner.
