Stephen Christopher MemorialJanuary 27-28, 2007Tournament ReportSixteen players came to this year's Stephen Christopher Memorial. Half of the players were rated greater than 1846. Nick Raptis, Viktors Pupols, Michael MacGregor, Paul Bartron, and Josh Sinanan were the Masters and Experts in the event. Clint Ballard, Peter O'Gorman, Allen Smith, and Casey Fleck--welcome back!!!--represented Class A. Andrew Walker, Dan Mathews, and Stephen Buck represented Class B. Class C had Constantine Etingher, Eric Holcomb, Michael Wang, and Eric Woodlief in attendance. Michael MacGregor won the event with 4.5/5.0, drawing to Dan Mathews in round one. The fifth round determined the winner. Josh Sinanan won a long and late round three against 2006 Washington Class Champion, Viktors Pupols. Then in round four he drew Nick Raptis. However, he lost his fifth round game to Michael MacGregor. The major upsets of the event included Eric Holcomb's (1533) win over Allen Smith (1847) and Michael Wang's (1571) win over Peter O'Gorman (1885), both of which occured in the first round. First place paid $110. The winner of Group 1 was Nick Raptis with 3.5/5.0, which paid $66. Clint Ballard and Josh Sinanan tied with 3.5/5.0 for Group 2 and each received $30. Eric Holcomb, Eric Woodlief, and Andrew Walker tied for Group 3 with 2.5/5.0, each receiving $19.33. (Andrew donated his prize to the club. Thanks.) As always, the major USCF-rated tournament games are on the Games web page. TCC Quad #1February 3, 2007Tournament ReportFour players came to the club to play in this year's first Quad. Brett Becker, USCF-rated 1635 and seeded third, scored a major coup by winning Clint Ballard (1915), drawing Stephen Buck (1700), finishing undefeated with a final score of 2/3 points. TCC U1800February 18, 2007Tournament ReportDuring the second weekend of the Washington State Premier and Championship, both closed events limited to 10 players per section, the Tacoma Chess Club hosted an event which provided an opportunity for those not invited to Seattle: the U1800 Open. Coincidentally, 10 players competed in this five-round, two-day event. Peter Lessler (1554) scored an amazing 4.5 points, upsetting such players as Eric Holcomb (1596) and August Piper (1577). Eric Holcomb came in second with 3.5 points. Stephen Buck, Travis Bleich, and Constantine Etingher all tied for third with 3.0 points each. Holly Campos (1205), the only female participating, scored 2.0 points. Northwest OpenMarch 10-11, 2007Tournament ReportFifteen players competed in Tacoma's Northwest Open. No Masters played, although there were two Experts. Michael MacGregor (2163) won the event with a score of 4.5 points: four wins and one half-point bye. The prize for 1st place was $72. Both Paul Bartron (2132) and Michael had 3.5 points after four rounds and faced off to determine the potential winner. Paul varied from his usual Sicilian and played the Pirc, and after a equal middle game, Paul got his queen trapped on the h-file, and the game ended several moves later. Stephen Buck (1700) did not lose a game, drew both Paul and Eric Woodlief, and finished in second place with 4 points. The prize for Group 3 was $38. (There was no prize for second place overall.) Michael Wang (1809) scored 3.5 points and won Group 2 and a check for $40. Paul Bartron won Group 1 and $44 with a score of 3.5 points. Daffodil OpenApril 14-15, 2007Tournament ReportTwenty-two players competed in Tacoma's Daffodil Open. No Masters played, although there were four Experts. Joshua Sinanan (2135) won the event with a perfect score of 5.0 points, winning a wild game and time scramble against Mike MacGregor in the final round, and winning his third-round game against Paul Bartron, the 2006 Tacoma Chess Club Champion. The next best score was 3.5, which was shared by four participants, two Experts, one Class A, and one Class B player. Please see the cross table (link above) for more information. Pierce County OpenMay 5-6, 2007Tournament ReportTwenty-three players competed in Tacoma's Pierce County Open. Michael MacGregor (2173) won the event with a 4.5 points, winning Paul Bartron in the third round and Jeff Lowther in the fifth. First place was only $62 because only eight players paid to play for prize money: eight players paid the Economy Entry fee ($12), and seven players were unrated (free entry). Allen Smith (1878) won Group 1 with a score of 3.5 points, and received a check for $37. Marvin Hayami (1827) won Group 2 with 4.0 points, and received a check for $35. (Allen and Marvin were in separate groups based on rating.) Nevin Ramanujan (Provisional 1433) won Group 3 with 3.0 points, and received a check for $33. Evergreen Empire OpenJuly 14-15, 2007Tournament ReportTwenty-two players competed in this year's Evergreen Empire Open, which offered two sections, Open and Reserve (U1800) and a $600 prize fund. In the Open Section, Alex Guo (1930) upset both of the two top seeds, Michael MacGregor (2184) and Paul Bartron (2084), losing only to Allen Smith (1892), to finish with 4/5 points. He received a check for $110 for his memorable performance. Allen Smith took second place with 3.5 points and received a check for $90. Michael Wang (1812), 2.0 points, took best score for ratings under 2000. In the Reserve Section, Niles Desmarais (1743), the top seed, went undefeated, winning three, drawing one, and taking a half-point bye, for a total of 4 points. He received $100 for first place. Cyrus Desmarais (1646) and Eric Holcomb (1608) tied for second with 3.5 points, splitting $80. Although three players tied with 3.0 points, Justin Yu (1275) took the best under 1400, $70. The best under 1600, Francis Wessbecher (1492) and Anthony Guo (1457), split $70 between the two of them. Tacoma Summer OpenAugust 18-19, 2007Tournament ReportFourteen players played in the Tacoma Summer Open. Neil Salmon, the only Master, graced the tournament with his presence. Michael MacGregor, the only Expert, won the event with a perfect 5-0 and received $57. Neil Salmon and Allen Smith, each with 3.5 points, won Group 1 and split the prize, receiving $16.50 per person. Agnieszka Nowakowska, visiting from Poland, and Carson Hannibal won Group 2 and split the prize, receiving $15.50 per person. Dave Juchau (1427) won Group 3 with 3.0 points, receiving $30.
